Canadian born, Montreal-based Etienne Roussy began his career as a cinematographer after completing a degree in cinema at the University of Quebec in 2009. Between 2009-2013, Etienne worked with the late collective, Epopée, surrounded by filmmakers Hubert Caron-Guay and Rodrigue Jean. During this time, he shared the role of cinematographer with Mathieu Laverdière on two hybrid documentaries which premiered at Visions du Réel in Nyon: “State of the Moment” (2012) and “State of the World” (2013). The combined body of work, “Love in the time of Civil War”, premiered at TIFF in 2014. Etienne was awarded at the Gala Quebec Cinema for best cinematography on the documentary “Gulistan, Land of Roses” (2015) directed by Zayne Akyol. “Gulistan” was also in competition at Hot Docs, Visions du Réel, True/False and many other film festivals. In 2016, Etienne Worked on the documentary “Destierros” directed by Hubert Caron-Guay. The film was selected at Visions du Réel in 2017 and was in competition for best cinematography at the Gala Québec Cinema. In 2019, Etienne was nominated for best cinematography at the Canadien screen Awards for “The Other Rio”, directed by Emilie Beaulieu-Guérette. Most recently, Etienne shared the role of cinematographer with Lena Mill-Reuillard on “A Colony” directed by Genevieve Dulude-De Celles. The film won the Crystal Beat at Berlinale in 2019.

Suivant des études en cinéma à l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM), Étienne Roussy définit rapidement son parcours en tant que directeur photo en assurant ce rôle dès sa sortie des classes en 2010. Il côtoie assez rapidement des réalisateurs comme Pier-Luc Latulippe et Rodrigue Jean en participant au court métrage « Rives » (2013) du premier et au long métrage du second « L’amour au temps de la guerre civile ». Le jeune diplômé traverse ensuite du côté du cinéma documentaire où il assure la cinématographie de « Bienvenue à F.L. » de Geneviève Dulude-De Celles en 2014 et celle de « Gulîstan, terre de roses » réalisé par Zaynê Akyol et pour laquelle il a été récompensé lors du premier Gala des artisans de Québec Cinéma.
